Devon Rex

The Devon Rex is a very special breed of cat that immediately stands out thanks to its wavy, almost sparse coat and large ears. It originates from England and is known for its playful, curious, and affectionate nature. Devon Rex cats are real little entertainers: they love games, climbing, and close contact with their humans. They are suitable for both apartments and houses with gardens, but are happiest when they receive lots of attention and variety.

Character and behavior

Devon Rex cats are very playful, curious, and intelligent. They love climbing, toys, and interactive games, but also enjoy being close to their humans. These cats are real jokers: they often play pranks, learn tricks quickly, and sometimes even fetch. They are very communicative, meow and purr a lot, and make it clear when they want attention. Devon Rex cats are affectionate, form close bonds with their owners, and quickly become bored if they don't have enough to do.

Coat care and hygiene

The Devon Rex's coat is short, soft, wavy, and almost velvety in some places. It is easy to care for, as the hair is neither long nor thick. Brushing once a week is usually sufficient to remove loose hair and keep the skin healthy. Devon Rex cats are very clean and groom themselves thoroughly. Nevertheless, their ears should be kept clean and their claws checked, as dirt can quickly accumulate due to their high activity level. Regular checks of their eyes and teeth are also advisable.

Size and weight

Devon Rex cats are small to medium-sized, very slender, and appear to be lightly built. Males usually weigh 3–4 kg, females 2–3 kg. They have long legs and a slender neck. Their low muscle mass makes them appear delicate, but they are very strong for their size. These cats need enough space to play and climb, but they are also happy in an apartment as long as they have enough to keep them occupied.

Affection for people

Devon Rex cats love closeness and are very affectionate. They like to cuddle, sit on your lap, and follow their humans around the house. They often show affection by purring, head-butting, or meowing softly. Many Devon Rex cats are very cuddly, some are rather headstrong, but all enjoy playing and spending time together. They get along well with children and other pets as long as they have their own places to retreat to. If you are looking for a playful, loyal, and affectionate cat, you will find a great companion in the Devon Rex.

Cat insurance

Cat insurance is a good idea for Devon Rex cats, as they can be prone to heart and skin problems. It covers veterinary costs in the event of illness or accident and provides peace of mind in everyday life. Many insurance companies also offer routine check-ups, vaccinations, and dental care, which is particularly useful for active and curious cats.

Life expectancy

Devon Rex cats live for an average of 10–15 years. With a good diet, regular visits to the vet, and sufficient exercise, they remain healthy. Their curiosity and intelligence ensure that they remain active even in old age. Opportunities to play, climb, and regular activity are important to keep them physically and mentally fit.

Frequent health problems

Devon Rex cats are considered robust cats, but they do have some potential health risks:

  • Heart problems (HCM): Thickening of the heart muscle, which can cause fatigue or breathing problems.
  • Skin problems: Since they have little fur, their skin can be sensitive, become dry, or show signs of irritation.
  • Dental problems: Tartar or gum inflammation can cause pain or eating problems.
  • Patellar luxation: Loose knee joint, which can sometimes lead to limping.

Regular checkups at the veterinarian and a caring, clean environment help to minimize these problems.

Price

Devon Rex cats are among the more expensive breeds. In Switzerland, they usually cost between CHF 1,500 and CHF 4,000, depending on the breeder, pedigree, and coat color. Reputable breeders pay attention to health, socialization, and species-appropriate rearing. In addition, there are ongoing costs for food, veterinary care, toys, and accessories. Despite the price, Devon Rex cats are long-lived, playful, and very loyal companions.
